Day 6 Los Arcos to Logrono

It is now 0630 and we are still in bed recovering from yesterday,as usual when I look out of the window I am greeted by my socks and underpants dangling in the wind.We both cried ourselves to sleep with laughter last night,I really think it is our sense of humour that is going to get us through this.
I still cannot believe we walked for nearly 10 hours yesterday ,my aching feet are a constant reminder..

It has just dawned on me that I have not got a clue what is going on in the world or what day it is,all that seems to matter to us looking after ourselves and covering the next mile.Sorry that people reading the blog  cannot leave posts but the emails you are sending with your comments really motivate us and it is lovely to know our travels are being followed .Please keep them coming.

We got up at 0700 and when I looked out of the window what joy sun at last, things were on the up.

We checked out of our hotel and went in search of  some breakfast in Los Arcos, had a tasty bacon roll then it was a knowing nod from Jeremy and we put on our rucksacks and went back onto The Camino.

Every town we have been through has such character and feels steeped in religious history and Los Arcos was no different.

As we moved on I could not help think Jeremy looked like a mobile laundry. We wash our clothes at night and if they are not dry in the morning , we pin them to our rucksacks and let them dry off, as we are heading west, the sun is always on our backs, this only works when it is not raining.

We always seek out a dog every day to put on the blog and we found today's early on.I was of a mind to take him home and get him out of that cage.

We soon saw Sansol in the distance ,virtually every town we have seen, the church towers over everything, the views were simply stunning .

We were beginning to see more and more vineyards,we were not far from getting into Rioja country.

We soon entered Sansol and decided to stop for a drink as we have a rule that we always stop around 5 miles to give us a break,it always seems to coincide with a bar.

Whilst I put my own washing away,Jeremy soaked his hot feet in the pool kindly provided for weary walkers.

We moved onto  the next village Torres del Rio, we came upon this church which looked  huge and there was a lady sitting in the entrance who beckoned us in and charged Jeremy 2 euros for the privilege ,upon entering ,it was one room with nothing in it,bless her she saw us coming.

Upon leaving after being in there for all of 10 seconds and seeing all there was to see ,she kept asking us what nationality we were ,I could not get it across to her that we were English after 10 goes of trying and failing badly,I came up with a brain wave ,I hit her with Winson Churchill Tottenham Hotspur Chelsea and Manchester City , she nodded and I think understood.

As we moved out of the town,we filled our water bottles from one of the taps provided, without going into too much detail we are always checking the colour of our pee to check we are not dehydrated, which is a real possibility in the heat ,our motto is if a pint goes out a pint goes in,that is water of course.well mabe the odd pint of beer.

As we moved out we walked with an Australian lady for five miles or so.Up we climbed then we started to meander through a valley which really reminded me of Cyprus. We came upon an old monastery at del Poyo. Please note Scallop shell on wall above our heads.

We could really sense the history of the area as we came across countless shelters of old.

Had to pose by this Cactus it was the only one we saw.

As we climbed out of the valley, it dawned on me that we had not seen anyone coming the other way, apart from when the weather turned, then this chap came arpound the corner towards us, it was not lost on us that the pilgrims of old had to walk both ways, how they did it with little food and poor footwear is beyond us.

Up we climbed then it was time for some serious repairs to our weary aching feet.

We headed off down the the road to Viana. A beautiful town , we decided to stop for lunch.

I had for lunch, Cauliflower with Potato and Garlicc,iI suspect it was Garlic with Cauliflower and a Potato ,it was delicious.

We left the town, again drinking in the history of this amazing place.

We left the town and headed for Logrono,I have to say the next stage was horrible ,as we left he country and were heading into an industrial area, the only relief is when we see this sign .

At last we enter Logrono, another beautiful place.

.We had a beer before we had sonething to eat and toasted ourselves we had gone through the 100 mile point and we realised that tomorrow we would be 25% of the way through our journey.

Wie  had a very tough day today,Jeremy has thrown a nail and is walking in sandals he looks the part now and my feet are still killing me,another brilliant day !!!!

Stats for day

Walked 18,2 miles

Walking time 6.36 hours.

Average speed. 2,8 mph

  1. Peter there always seems to be a woman and a bar in every blog beginning to get worried! No more dogs to bring home please. To get through the hardest journey we need to take only one step at a time but we mets keep on stepping says john after a bottle of Rioja! If I had my smalls on Jeremy's backpack you would have got to the next point a lot quicker with the wind blowing you along! Xx love to you both john and soraya xxxxx

  2. Medals being struck for you both...... Fabulous commentary. It has struck me in the past that as you get to the 5 or 6 days into a hike the body almost leads you on .... almost as if the body has conditioned itself to the new way of things ? You are going far beyond ..... and I am crossing fingers that might be the case as you go on ? Message for Jerry: G day my friend, Ems will have a little Ems Monday afternoon. Will text update. Take care of each other. Snags

  3. I am profoundly in awe of you both, the blog is quite exceptional. Keep it up. I only wish we'd thought to provision some Old Chopper en route for you, much as marathon runners stop by the water points as they go! Oli
